Big Data Week 2013 Atlanta Videos

Posted in 2013 on 24.05.13

Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) April 30, 2013

Eclipse Web Media has posted the full videos of the Big Data Week 2013 Kickoff Event. The event featured presentations from the New York Times’ Steve Lohr, and Datanami’s Nicole Hemsoth.

The Kickoff Event’s keynote was from Marty Cetron, the Director for the Division of Global Migration and Quarantine, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Marty Cetron highlighted in his keynote about globalization and the effects it has on public health.

“We’re living in a very globalized society. This represents a new paradigm of thinking about what that means to deal with threats and protecting the public.”

Dr. Cetron discussed the evolution of Big Data and how we can now mine that data. One of his examples was by showing a USGS map of wild bird migrations to track potential bird flu outbreaks.

The Kickoff Event also had panel discussions about big data in security and business settings. Panelists included Thomas Madden (Chief Information Security Officer of the CDC), Joseph Guerrisi (VP Corporate Marketing of UPS), Robert Candelmo (SVP, Corporate Functions Relationship Executive of SunTrust) and William VanCuren (CIO of NCR).

Carltons Training Solutions Announces Relationship with Ben Zander Training Videos

Posted in 2013 on 20.05.13

Boston, MA (PRWEB) December 01, 2012

Carltons Training Solutions changes the way companies function as a whole when using Ben Zander training videos. The fundamental Zander principles are devastating in their simplicity and how they can turn a company and its employees around so radically. A Ben Zander video by Carltons Training creates opportunities for growth and proffers success unseen before.

Choosing to live in a world of possibility or a world of luck or failure. Leadership is knowing every time a manager opens their mouth they can choose a positive attitude and thus it reflects in positive efforts and then positive outcomes. Or live in the downward spiral with statements that the economy is bad, or its just bad luck, and many other excuses. But its all how companies perceive their situation. Ben Zander said, My father used to say there is no such thing as bad weather. Only inappropriate clothing.

At the world business forum in New York Zander tells a great story that says it all and turns even the greatest pessimist into a believer. Two shoe salesmen from Manchester were sent to Africa to see if they could expand their market there. One sent back a telegram that stated situation is hopeless, they dont wear shoes. The second sent a telegram that said glorious opportunity, they dont have any shoes yet!

How does a company capture that attitude that radiates from Ben Zander? As he states in his corporate training video Attitude: Radiating Possibility, it is not a message. It is a practice. Anything leaders do, negatively or in a positive fashion becomes habit. Living in the realm of possibility is something that organizations must practice consistently. If a client needs a twenty-day project done in fifteen days a company can say it cant be done. Or they can say what an opportunity! If they create a way to complete this in 75% of the time it normally takes they can do it for other clients and have more time to take on new clients and increase their profit 25% at least!

Carltons Training Solutions find companies use the Ben Zander Leadership: An Art of Possibility training video so much because it takes practice for something to take hold. Like any tool, it grows sharper each time it is used. Using a Ben Zander video from Carltons Training inspires a prosperous attitude with results the company can see.

Madeline The Jegging Elopement

Posted in 2013 on 17.05.13

Since intern Madeline married in December and had her reception a handful of weeks ago, she’s throwing us little hints and whispers of the tale. First up, their city hall elopement. I couldn’t be more in love with it.

I didn’t plan on wearing jeggings on my wedding day—it just happened.φορεματα

abendkleider

I didn’t even know they were jeggings. I thought they were leggings with a fly and pockets. According to my good friend Alice, that is the definition of a jegging. But at the time, I was ignorant of this distinction. It was December, and I needed to cover my legs.

I put them on under a dress I bought for $11 from Banana Republic in 2008. Back then, we all thought the capitalist world was about to end. Stores were resorting to extreme sales to stop us all from giving up and dressing in trash bags. I never stopped to thank the banks for creating the discount frenzy that provided the dress I got married in. Let me remedy that: Thank you, banks.

Next up, a battered pair of boots, a comfort purchase after an old break-up. An aging sweater of my grandma’s. (“You can see the holes in the sleeves!” my mother said, of the photos.) A white flower pendant I picked up in Tokyo in 2010. And a pink, flowery headpiece from a New York City drugstore. Done and done.

We had applied for the license and overcome the 24-hour “cooling off” period required by state law. Two dear friends were standing by to witness the paperwork. We had exquisite wedding bands by Brandon’s friend Satomi—not the customary 2, but 4. (Yes, I couldn’t choose, and now I have three wedding bands. So sue me.) We were even allotted a celebrant straight off the set of the Sopranos. (“Congratulations to yous.”)

I know people worry about eloping and whether or not it feels “real.” Somehow, your imaginary wedding—where you’re dancing round a castle? in a poofy dress?—has been worming its way into your brain for so long that you’ve begun to confuse it with reality. Realizing that your reality is what you make it is surprisingly hard. As a wise lady once wrote, “It takes firmness of purpose to fly in the face of Everything That Is Expected and run off to get married with no fuss and no bother.”

But here’s what I learnt:hääpuvut

Plus size dresses There is nothing more real than rocking up to City Hall on a Monday morning before work, hoping you’ve remembered your passport and your credit card. Surreptitiously adjusting your jeggings. And getting married.

Leah And Mark Wedding Photography All Over The US & Wedding Home Movies

Posted in 2013 on 17.05.13

Today I’m delighted to get to write about long time APW Photography sponsors LeahAndMark.com, who are based in Atlanta, but shoot all over the US with no travel fees. When Leah and Mark first started with APW, they just had a few weddings under their belt, and you guys turned their raw talented into a big time, awesome career (but no, their photos are not a million dollars now!). You flew them all over the country to shoot your weddings, and they paid you back with gorgeous pictures, and a seriously awesome business. I’m not kidding when I say seriously awesome. Part of Leah and Mark‘s deal is that they give a portion of their profits to Kiva.org, to fund loans for entrepreneurs in developing countries. And their total loans with Kiva are now nearing $12,000, in large part thanks to you guys (amazing, right?)

And this awesome business could not have happened to better people.φορεματα

galajurken

After years of sponsorship, I first met Mark in person last summer, when he and +Raven (Because yup! They totally have a studio full of photographers, who are hilarious and talented, and cost a little less than Leah and Mark) came up to New York City, for free, to volunteer their time shooting for Yay New York, our mass wedding and reception to celebrate marriage equality. And the photos were great, but Mark and +Raven were also exactly who I wanted to have in the room with us that day: funny, game for anything, and balls of talent. Then, in February, when I added a last minute stop in Atlanta to my book tour, Leah and Mark threw the whole book tour stop for me. They planned it in TWO DAYS. And it was one of the best stops of the tour, hands down. In short, these are people you totally want at your wedding.

I’m going to let them tell you a bit about themselves in their own words:gallakjoler
Plus size dresses

Ever since we became an APW Sponsor we’ve been booked by some of the best clients all over the country. And not only do they keep flying us out to photograph their weddings—but they’ve even flown us out to photograph their engagement sessions. Not just one or two states over—we’re talking about from Atlanta to San Francisco (a trip I’ve made three times now—once for a wedding and twice for engagement sessions—and that was for three different clients!). So if anyone thinks that just because we’re based in Atlanta that we won’t be able to photograph their wedding AND their engagement sessions—that’s totally not the case.

The wedding photography package that we’re offering to APW couples is essentially the same one we’ve always offered: $3,650 for anywhere in the continental United States. Travel included. Ten hours of coverage, and of course the usual hi-res jpg files on dvd with a personal use license.

BUT—we now also offer something we’re calling Wedding Home Movies. They’re like wedding videos, but a little different. Because just like your wedding day isn’t the time for a styled magazine photoshoot—it’s also not appropriate to turn it into a movie set. Our movie packages are only available to our clients that hire us for photography, and we don’t bring any extra people. That’s right—we handle the photography and videography ourselves. We’ve had to literally invent new gear, and techniques and it’s taken us several months of practice—but we’ve got it down. Of course we’re constantly still inventing new equipment and new methods to make things more seamless. Technology is our friend and we’re not afraid to use up to eight cameras in discreet locations during a ceremony to capture multiple angles. Basically—instead of possibly having a crew of four or five people for videography and photography at your wedding, you’ll just have two people, doing both videography and photography simultaneously with multiple cameras. Oh—and we’re offering our Full Movie package for only $950 for APWers—down from our regular rate of $1,750 (this is an add on to a photography package).

And you guys? I’m SUPER excited about Leah and Mark‘s Wedding Home Movies. While they took pictures at Yay New York, they also surprised us with a video. I literally didn’t really see them working on it (they shot the video from their regular cameras) and then surprised me with it. It’s one of my favorite memories from the event: simple, not at all fancy or pretentious, and makes me cry every time. So it makes perfect sense that Leah and Mark say, “We don’t make wedding films. We don’t elevate wedding videography into a cinematic, magical, and artistic endeavor that justifies our film school tuition. That’s not a bad thing—but we’re just not those people.” Instead they do just what you need, give you something really simple, perfect to remember the day with.

Plus, Mark told me,abendkleider

hääpuvut “Oh yeah—and since we really, really love our APW couples—for any couple that books us by the end of May, we’ll include a 1-3 minute video highlight reel—even if they don’t purchase our wedding home movie package. We’re serious when we say that we LOVE APW Couples and we’d love to work with more of them.”

So you guys? Leah and Mark just got better! Not only will they fly all over the country to shoot your wedding, anywhere, with special APW-only pricing. Now they offer affordable wedding videos too! Plus, they will show up and be awesome, and you will be so damn glad you hired them. (This is one of those moments that I super love my job. The End.)

Soothe High Anxiety with Deva Premal & Mitens 21-Day Mantra Meditation Journey, Launching this Tuesday, April 23rd in Tandem with Their New Album, A Deeper Light

Posted in 2013 on 14.05.13

Boulder, CO (PRWEB) April 23, 2013

Best-selling chant artists Deva Premal & Miten are leading a 21-Day Mantra Meditation Journey beginning Tuesday, April 23rd through the Mentors Channel, a website offering coaching in personal growth that has presented similar programs from Oprah Winfrey and Deepak Chopra. The series launches in conjunction with the release of Deva and Mitens new album, A Deeper Light (April 23rd, White Swan Records).

Anyone who has ever taken a yoga class or experimented with any kind of alternative stress-reduction therapy, from detox to dynamic meditation, pilates to acupuncture, is likely to have heard the music of Deva Premal & Miten. Partners in life and music for over twenty years, their unique renditions of ancient mantras are played in yoga studios and healing rooms everywhere, and their music has touched the hearts of millions of listeners.

At the heart of their music that has earned Deva and Miten such widespread admiration are mantras: energetic sound formulas, created thousands of years ago by the rishis (wise men) of ancient India, who understood the power of sound as a pathway to enlightenment. Over the course of this three-week program, Deva & Miten will share a new mantra each day, explaining its meaning, chanting it with the participant and meditating on the mantras essential energetic quality.

A program of 21 days provides the possibility for real and lasting change to occur, in body, mind and spirit. Among the programs key benefits:

–Chanting charges and revitalizes the body on a physical, cellular level, promoting deeper breathing and the movement of prana (life energy) through the body.

–Chanting allows for enhanced expression with simple clarity and power.

–Chanting stills the mind, resulting in a deep state of inner relaxation and peace.

The 21-Day Mantra Meditation Journey begins Tuesday, April 23rd and will be available free of charge for the first three weeks, and then available for purchase as both a download and an app after the initial three-week period of free access ends.

This unique program is timed to coincide with the release of Deva Premal & Mitens latest album, A Deeper Light, by Boulder, CO-based White Swan Records. On the new record, Deva and Miten intertwine their trademark Sanskrit mantras with sensual, dub-inspired grooves. Devas distinctive vibrato focuses the hypnotic vibe, heightening the inherent power of the sacred chants she intones. This refreshing new work brings a vibrant, sensual energy to the world’s oldest devotional music and presents a fresh direction for the enduringly popular artists.

The producers Miten, along with Vancouver-based Joby Baker (Toni Childs, Cowboy Junkies, Alex Cuba) and Dutch keyboardist Maneesh de Moor — went for a very warm, organic sound, requiring the artists to take a new approach. Rather than weeks of solo sessions and bouncing tracks back and forth via the internet, all the musicians Nepalese bansuri flute maestro Manose, de Moor on keyboards and Richard Moody on violin and viola — spent two weeks together in Bakers intimate studio, working as a group in real time on every track to get a sound and a vibe that was much more live than studied. Almost all the instruments used were acoustic, with live drums, bass, piano, guitar, and violins. Miten comments, Everything moved air and thats what makes the music breathe.

In these turbulent times, Deva and Miten’s chilled out Sanskrit chants offer something of a musical balm to calm the nerves and nourish the tortured spirit. This authentic and honest expression of love and commitment to a spiritual path is what sets them apart from their musical contemporaries.

In Deva Premal and Mitens view, We see ourselves more as flame carriers of a 5,000 year old tradition than emotion-based musicians. The music we make is born out of a committed spiritual practice. We meditate — we investigate — and our music is a result of that experience. It’s more a case of life and death than entertainment!”

A Deeper Light is being released by White Swan Records on the first day of the 21-Day Mantra Meditation Journey: this Tuesday, April 23rd.

Reclaiming Wife Changing Your Name (Back)

Posted in 2013 on 11.05.13

Brenna sent me a thank you email last week… except, when I opened it up, it was actually one of the most mind-blowingly empowering and brave stories I’d ever read. You see, Brenna changed her name. And then she changed it back. And Team Practical, and your amazing comments on the APW name change posts are part of what gave her the strength to make the choice she did. So here we go, proving that there are no right choices, only choices that are right for us, and we always have the right to change our minds.

I didn’t know that it wasn’t right for me to change my name. Until I changed my name.

I suppose there’s more to it than that.Quinceanera Dresses
abendkleider

I waffled back and forth during our whole engagement, but eventually decided to add Hisname to the end of my name, giving myself two middle names.

Last June, we got married.

At first, I loved signing my husband’s name. Two “t”s at the end was really fun to write. It was novel and thrilling.

Then school started (I teach eighth grade), and every day I heard a name that wasn’t mine. I made decisions; I introduced myself to parents. I tried using both names together, but it only worked in writing. We talked about the importance of Ms. I inwardly grinned when catalogs would show up with my old name on them or when former students or colleagues would slip up and forget my new name. I tried waiting. I waited three months, then four, for my students calling me Ms. Hisname to seem like it was right. I hoped the time I spent pouring over women’s last names online and comparing my choice to theirs would diminish over time. I gave into the idea that it was just something I had to get used to. I had convinced myself that once the decision was made, I had to stick to it. I recalled some of the reasons I wanted to take his name: he and I having a team name, not liking the aesthetics of the hyphen, sharing a name with my future children.

I remembered how I had briefly considered using my name professionally and his name socially. This was what I really wanted, but I had thrown it out as impractical. I thought other people would be confused. I live in a small community, and even if/when we leave this place, I really like teaching and living in the same district. If/when we have children, I feared it would cause confusion if I taught at one school under one name and attended parent-teacher conferences with another.

There’s more, though.festklänningar
Plus size clothing I think I had convinced myself that being an eighth grade English teacher wasn’t a worthy-enough profession for which to keep my name professionally. That was something doctors or lawyers or published writers did. Admitting and reading that now makes me more than a little sick. What I do on a daily basis matters. I’m still not sure why I couldn’t see it as enough of a reason.

Something clicked last Friday on our teacher workday.I could do whatever I wanted. People would figure it out. Perhaps it was better to confuse a few other people along the way than to spend the days of my life confused about the choices I made.

Sure, it’s strange to change a name mid-year,trouwjurken
Hääpuvut particularly when I just started the year with a new name, particularly in my small town where few students have had a teacher that isn’t Mrs. ______. But it sure provides a great opportunity to discuss identity and choices and changing your mind when you have given something a fair shake and you know deep down it isn’t right.

I talked to my principal and human resources (who were amazingly supportive) and students today (The best response: “This will come in really handy on your next crime spree”). After school I sent an email to the staff. Everything connected to my work at school is in the process of being changed. I haven’t smiled so much in one day for a long time. It finally felt right.

Why am I telling you guys this? Because I believe the sense that it was okay to change my mind–even if I get talked about at lunch by other teachers, even if this is the only thing my students from this year remember about me, even if it gets a little messy–came (in part–but a big part) from APW and the community created here. When I was making my decision before the wedding, I poured over the name change posts and read all the comments (probably without commenting myself–I’m kind of creepy like that).

Before I went into school Tuesday to see what my options (legally and logistically) were, I reread those posts and comments and it reinforced that I had to do what felt right for me.

Thank you, thank you for your support and constant reminders that we DO have choices, even if we made the wrong one for me the first time. I feel like I can embrace using Hisname when I WANT to use it, and leave it out when I don’t.

Thanks. All of you.

Maybe I could turn up at the wedding in a sack, or clothe myself in hundreds of gorgeous invitations? Needless to say, if I scored this giveaway I would be there in a flash buying the most exquisite of forbidden pretties…. Not to mention driving my fiance crazy with all the projects in the book! Hooray!

So hooray indeed! Someone from Hello Lucky will be contacting you shortly, and you’ll be getting their new DIY book, Handmade Weddings, and a $200 gift certificate towards wedding stationery. (PS, and if you didn’t win, Hello Lucky and Pingg are running a contest right now too!)

And that’s it guys. Aren’t they great? Happy May indeed!
